Athletic Crash & Burn

I’ll always remember my running coach, who trained an Olympic gold medalist, saying:

“If you stay healthy and keep up your progress you could go to the Olympics in a few years”.

I'd been at it for 10 years and now it was make or break to see whether I could cut it at an international level by qualify for the World Junior Championships in the 1500m.

A got very sick with respiratory and digestive problems that kept me up most nights for over 6 months.

This was compounded by the love of my life girlfriend leaving also.

This sent me into a downward spiral of depression and pain.

I numbed this through eating and drinking more and dating whoever seemed interested.

This denial only further intensified the pain.

The pain of falling short of my vision forced me to reflect deeply:

“What was missing and how can I prevent this happening again?"

The Quest For Deeper Self Knowledge, Leadership & Purpose

This sent me on a journey of gaining deeper Self knowledge.

I became a full-time meditating monk at the age of 25 for 10 years, preceded by a few years of basic training.

This was the real deal of silent monastic living.

8-hours a day / 7 days a week diving into silence within. 

I committed to do this for 1-year.

The purpose of this path was so strong and enjoyable it became 10 years.

Then I decided to return to worldly life.

Why? 

On a personal purpose level, to integrate the silence and self knowledge I gained into more activity.

I did this through a couple of years acting study in NYC in 2007-2008 while the global financial crisis was unfolding.

Very experienced leaders' reputations were falling as fast as the market was.

This is when I awoke to my professional purpose....
I awoke to my purpose when I thought:

 How come very intelligent, very experienced leaders created this crisis
 for themselves and the world?

The Sad Downside To Avert Being A Top Leader

New York Times best selling author Thomas Friedman, author of Thank You for Being Late, labeled the years since 2007 the age of acceleration.

This is when the iPhone came out, microprocessing speed and globalization took a quantum leap.

Achievement has been incredible since then.

But its come at a price.

Here are some recent unfortunate examples:
· While exercising during a family vacation, SurveyMonkey’s CEO Dave Goldberg died suddenly at the age of 47. Goldberg grew SurveyMonkey from 12 employees to 450 and to a $2 billion valuation. He was considered an irreplaceable talent.

· Steve Jobs was able to save Apple after he came back as CEO in 1996, but ironically was not able to save himself and passed away at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.

· Autumn Radtke, the 28-year-old CEO of Bitcoin exchange First Meta, jumped to her death in Singapore on 26 February 2014. On February 10th she posted a link to an essay entitled ‘The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship’ and commented that everything had its price.

· Steven LeVoie founder of Arrowstream was shot by one of his own top lieutenants, at the age 54 in 2014.

· Michael Walsh, age 51 and CEO of Tenneco, succumbed to brain cancer.

· McDonald’s 60-year-old CEO, Jim Cantalupo, died of a heart attack in 2004. The board hastily replaced him with 43-year-old Charlie Bell, who died nine months later.

· Kate Spade built an iconic fashion brand only to pass at age 56 after suffering severe bouts of depression.
These are just a handful who didn’t come out alive from their leadership tenure.
Many more leaders go through unspoken suffering taking on the challenges of their role.

Athletic Crash & Burn

I’ll always remember my running coach, who trained an Olympic gold medalist, saying:

“If you stay healthy and keep up your progress you could go to the Olympics in a few years”.

I'd been at it for 10 years and now it was make or break to see whether I could cut it at an international level by qualify for the World Junior Championships in the 1500m.

Unfortunately, I missed qualifying for the World Juniors by 2.5 seconds because I wasn’t enlightened enough to stay healthy and ended up burning out.

A got very sick with respiratory and digestive problems that kept me up most nights for over 6 months.

This was compounded by the love of my life girlfriend leaving also.

This sent me into a downward spiral of depression and pain.

I numbed this through eating and drinking more and dating whoever seemed interested.

This denial only further intensified the pain.

The pain of falling short of my vision forced me to reflect deeply:

“What was missing and how can I prevent this happening again?"

The Quest For Deeper Self Knowledge, Leadership & Purpose

This sent me on a journey of gaining deeper Self knowledge.

I became a full-time meditating monk at the age of 25 for 10 years, preceded by a few years of basic training.

This was the real deal of silent monastic living.

8-hours a day / 7 days a week diving into silence within. 

I committed to do this for 1-year.

The purpose of this path was so strong and enjoyable it became 10 years.

Then I decided to return to worldly life.

Why? 

On a personal purpose level, to integrate the silence and self knowledge I gained into more activity.

I did this through a couple of years acting study in NYC in 2007-2008 while the global financial crisis was unfolding.

Very experienced leaders' reputations were falling as fast as the market was.

This is when I awoke to my professional purpose....

when I thought:

 How come very intelligent, very experienced leaders created this crisis for themselves and the world?

The Sad Downside To Avert Being A Top Leader

New York Times best selling author Thomas Friedman, author of Thank You for Being Late, labeled the years since 2007 the age of acceleration.

This is when the iPhone came out, microprocessing speed and globalization took a quantum leap.

Achievement has been incredible since then.

But its come at a price.

Here are some recent unfortunate examples:
· While exercising during a family vacation, SurveyMonkey’s CEO Dave Goldberg died suddenly at the age of 47. Goldberg grew SurveyMonkey from 12 employees to 450 and to a $2 billion valuation. He was considered an irreplaceable talent.

· Steve Jobs was able to save Apple after he came back as CEO in 1996, but ironically was not able to save himself and passed away at the age of 56 from pancreatic cancer.

· Autumn Radtke, the 28-year-old CEO of Bitcoin exchange First Meta, jumped to her death in Singapore on 26 February 2014. On February 10th she posted a link to an essay entitled ‘The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship’ and commented that everything had its price.

· Steven LeVoie founder of Arrowstream was shot by one of his own top lieutenants, at the age 54 in 2014.

· Michael Walsh, age 51 and CEO of Tenneco, succumbed to brain cancer.

· McDonald’s 60-year-old CEO, Jim Cantalupo, died of a heart attack in 2004. The board hastily replaced him with 43-year-old Charlie Bell, who died nine months later.

· Kate Spade built an iconic fashion brand only to pass at age 56 after suffering severe bouts of depression.
These are just a handful who didn’t come out alive from their leadership tenure.

Many more leaders go through unspoken suffering taking on the challenges of their role.
